Year 6 visits American Military Cemetery
1 June 2026
Year 6 students visited the American Military Cemetery in Hamm on Monday, 1 June 2026, as part of their learning about World War II, with a particular focus on its impact in Luxembourg.
During the visit, students learned about the lives and stories of some of the service people buried there, gaining insight into the conflicts they were involved in and the sacrifices they made. They also discovered how the military works to identify fallen soldiers and, where possible, return them to their families. This helped to bring a very human perspective to their historical studies.
Students saw the grave of General George S Patton and heard powerful accounts of several Medal of Honor recipients, as well as the story of the only woman buried at the cemetery. These stories helped deepen their understanding of the personal experiences behind historical events.
At the end of the visit, the students took part in a short act of remembrance, laying a wreath at the chapel while listening to the Last Post. This provided a quiet moment for reflection and respect.
It was a moving and thought-provoking visit, which allowed students to connect their classroom learning to real people and places and to reflect on the lasting impact of World War II.
