Music

Music is a central part of life at St George’s.

Our programmes encourage students to discover their unique musical voice while building confidence, creativity and a lifelong love for the performing arts. We believe that music is meant to be shared and every student regular opportunities to perform in front of an audience, helping them build confidence and stage presence.

From the youngest children in EYFS to our A level students in their final years of school, our children have access to an orchestra of musical instruments and tuition by class and individual music teachers who are accomplished musicians in their own right. Music helps us create an environment at St George’s that is balanced, positive, welcoming and inspirational. Whether students dream of a career in music or simply enjoy making it, our varied music programmes provide the tools, experiences and encouragement to help them thrive.

Primary Secondary Individual Music Lessons

Primary

Primary Music Class

In Milepost 1 students learn about rhythm, tempo and pitch through singing songs, clapping to a steady beat and playing the xylophone. They explore music of the world (Kenya) and historical cultural icons and prepare for a stage show.

The musical journey continues in Milepost 2 with the introduction of the recorder and ukulele, more music from around the world (Japan and India) and an introduction to instrument families through the orchestra. Students present a large stage show and learn about musical theatre.

In Milepost 3, Year 5 students perform a show, learn about music from films, video games and World War II, while Caribbean music provides an international flavour to their learning. Year 6 students compose a pop song, perform at the Christmas markets and their graduation ceremony, and learn about medieval music and the musical style of the tango. Students in Milepost 3 also complete units on music technology.

Secondary

Secondary Music

From Years 7 to 9 (ages 11–14), all students enjoy a broad arts education that includes music. At the end of Year 9 they have the option of choosing GCSE music for Years 10 and 11 and can continue their musical journey into Key Stage 5 with A level music.

Through a dynamic and engaging curriculum, students develop essential skills in appraising, composing and performing. They start in Year 7 by exploring rhythm through step movements, ukulele, bucket drumming, and songwriting. In following years they refine their composition and performance abilities, growing in confidence as musicians and performers.

Individual Music Lessons

Private Violin Lesson

St George’s offers private vocal and instrumental music lessons that support our students’ musical journeys and give them the chance to explore musical passions. The 30-minute lessons are held during the school day, leaving after-school hours free for participation in clubs and music ensembles.

Our approach is built on three key pillars: musicianship, individual tuition and ensemble performance. Our dedicated team of music teachers provides expert vocal and instrumental tuition to around 260 students each week. Our young musicians develop their skills with individual attention and showcase their progress in recitals and performances throughout the year.
