Merite Jeunesse

St George’s is the largest centre in Luxembourg for the Mérite Jeunesse Programme, also known as The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award. This globally recognised programme encourages young people to step outside their comfort zones, develop essential life skills and become well-rounded, responsible individuals.

What is the Mérite Jeunesse Programme?

The Mérite Jeunesse Programme is a non-formal education framework that challenges students aged 14 to 24 to set personal goals, engage in service to their community, develop new skills, take part in physical activities and embark on adventurous expeditions.

The programme is available at three levels:

Bronze (14+ years old)
A great introduction to self-development and teamwork.
Silver (15+ years old)
A step up in challenge, requiring greater commitment.
Gold (16+ years old)
The highest level, demanding leadership, resilience and a Residential Project.

To complete the award, students must take part in four (five for Gold) key areas:

Service
Volunteering in the community to help others and develop empathy.
Skills
Learning a new skill, from playing an instrument to coding or photography.
Physical Recreation
Improving physical health through sports or fitness activities.
Adventurous Journey
Planning and undertaking an expedition in nature.
Residential Project (Gold Level Only)
A meaningful experience with new people in an unfamiliar setting.

Why take part?

The Mérite Jeunesse Programme is not just about awards; it’s about personal growth. By taking part, students:

  • Gain confidence, leadership, and teamwork skills.
  • Build resilience, independence, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Improve physical and mental well-being through challenges.
  • Strengthen their college and job applications with a globally respected certification.
  • Experience adventure, make lifelong friendships, and create unforgettable memories.

Where can it lead?

The Mérite Jeunesse Award is highly valued by universities and employers worldwide. Completing the programme demonstrates dedication, perseverance and a commitment to personal and social development. Many students who achieve the Gold Award are invited to special recognition ceremonies attended by notable figures, giving them an excellent networking opportunity.
