NPQEYL

The NPQEYL is a nationally recognised qualification for early years leaders who are, or aspire to be, managers of private, voluntary and independent (PVI) nurseries, headteachers of school-based or maintained nurseries, or childminders with leadership responsibilities. Delivered by the UCL Institute of Education (University College London) with the European Hub as delivery partner, this 18-month programme develops the knowledge, skills and confidence to lead high-quality early years provision and improve outcomes for children and families.

 

Programme Details 
  • Duration: 18 months, part-time alongside your role  OptimizedImage,,,Optimized

  • Format: Blended (online modules, live webinars, and 3 x in-person sessions in Luxembourg) 

  • Assessment: One open-book case study assessment completed over an eight-day period

  • Eligibility: Early years leaders qualified to at least Level 3 with a full and relevant qualification,including
    managers of PVI nurseries, headteachers of school-based or maintained nurseries, and childminders with leadership responsibilities 

 

Dates and Fees 
  • Start: November 2026

  • Application window: September 2026 

  • Fees: £1,249 (+VAT)
     

  • Funding: Scholarship funding may be available for eligible participants working in publicly funded early years settings, maintained nursery schools, PVI settings, and Ofsted-registered childminders in England

How to Apply 
  • Register via the DfE NPQ Registration Service and select UCL Institute of Education as your provider. 
  • UCL will contact you to complete enrolment and confirm delivery through the European Hub.

Who can apply for NPQEYLs?

NPQEYLs are open to teaching staff who are looking to build on their leadership capacity in the Early Years. Whether you are in your first leadership role or aiming to move into senior positions, there’s an NPQ that aligns with your goals.


Where and how are they delivered?

Courses are delivered online and through face-to-face sessions in Luxembourg in collaboration with the UCL Institute of Education including a blend of online learning, live sessions and practical school-based tasks. As part of The European Hub, sessions are scheduled to suit international school calendars.
