World Challenge: Madagascar
15 September 2019
In June/July a team of 17 students, 1 staff member and 2 World Challenge leaders embarked on a once in lifetime journey to the world's second largest island, Madagascar. In a country famous for its flora and fauna, the team hoped to experience some of its many wonders over the course of 3 weeks.
The journey started in the capital city, Antananarivo, then onto the sand dune deserts of the South West. From there we travelled through the highlands and savannahs before settling in the tropical jungle region in the East. During the expedition the students supported a local conservation project (Reef Doctor), where the team were influential in rebuilding the boardwalks that led through the mangroves. The students even celebrated National Day with the community leaders at a festival, during which we showed off our finest dance moves to impress the locals! After our project phase ended we travelled into the heart of the country where the scenery was simply stunning. Our final stage was to be a week in the rainforest region basing ourselves in Ranamofama National Park. Whilst here we camped under the canopy of trees and were serenaded to sleep by the howling lemurs! When our time was up we returned to the capital city for a some rest, a bit of shopping and some good local food. The summer of 2019 will be an unforgettable one for all of the World Challenge team and all I can say is take the opportunity when it arrives to be part of the adventure.
