Under 11 footballers put best foot forward

25 March 2026

Three teams from St George's were among the 46 teams participating in the Mediterranean Cup in Verona, Italy, from 19 to 22 March. The tournament featured 17 girls’ teams and 29 boys’ teams, making it a highly competitive event.

The boys red team had an outstanding tournament, finishing first in their group and qualifying for the elite group. They secured a 1–0 victory against Prague and a draw against Milan. In the afternoon, they faced strong competition from Brussels' boys red team and despite showing great determination, they narrowly lost 2–1.
Overall, they finished third in the tournament, which was an exceptional achievement and the best result for St George's since the school begain participating in the Under 11 competition.

The best for me was on the first day in our first game when we won 4-1 against Como. This helped us to focus and made us feel confident so we could keep playing well and keep winning.
– Dauren, boys red team captain
The girls team entered the competition with great enthusiasm, especially as many players had only started playing football in September and were experiencing their first tournament. They made an impressive debut, finishing second in their group and qualifying for the elite group. Their progress throughout the tournament was remarkable, improving with each game and growing in confidence. They finished fourth overall, the highest placement ever achieved by our girls’ team. Individually, Layana ranked 15th among top scorers and Lucia was ranked 12th best player out of approximately 210 participants – both outstanding achievements.

My best moment was when I scored a penalty. I was nervous before, but my team helped me to be calm and I felt really good. After I scored, I was so happy and we all started shouting.
– Lucia, girls team captain

The boys white team also began strongly, finishing second in their group. They progressed to the champions league competition, where they faced tough opposition. The team remained focused and determined, and their efforts were rewarded as they won the Champions Silver Cup. Diego was recognised as the third best player of the competition, which is an excellent individual accomplishment.

Celebrating with my team was the nicest moment. Diego scored lots of goals for us, but the whole team put in a great effort. It's not just the goals that count for me – it is everything, like the defending and teamwork too.
– Christian, boys white team captain
Overall, it was a fantastic tournament. The students built great friendships, and are already looking forward to next year’s competition.
