'The Woman in Black' - School trip to London
26 April 2016
On Friday 22nd April a group of Year 10 and Year 11 drama students travelled to London for the weekend to see “The Woman in Black”, at Fortune Theatre near Covent Garden. They stayed at the London School of Economics, Halls of residence.
Students were taken on a backstage tour of London’s National Theatre, visiting all 4 stages. They were able to see Drum-road, a path behind the stage where props and scenery are transported to storage or from stage to stage. Students were also able to view and interact with the Wonderdotland interactive exhibition.
Whilst on the south bank the group took the opportunity to visit the Tate Modern and accepted the challenge to find the weirdest and most wonderful art pieces in the gallery.
Next they went to Convent Garden to explore and view the multitude of street theatre on offer. They met up with 2 former St George's students and had the famous British delicacy, Fish and Chips.
The finale’ of the day was a visit to the “Woman in Black”, an adaptation of Susan Hill’s novel which was the scariest play most of the students had ever seen. The whole play is performed by two actors, they created tension and fear through their depiction of a multitude of characters. The sound effects and lighting took the audience on a roller-coaster of fear. They felt sorrow for the plight of the unseen characters Jeanette Humphries and Alice Drablow whose stories unravel as the play progresses. Students feared they were going to have nightmares that night. Some couldn’t bare the tension by the end.
All of the students enjoyed the trip, feeling inspired to create high quality Drama upon their return to school. They can’t wait to go on another Drama trip. Hopefully there will be a bigger group and a longer trip next year!
