The buzz of Book Week
13 February 2014
Walk through the corridors of the Hamilius building this week and you’ll definitely notice the excitement in the air…it is Book Week at St. George’s, and Primary students have had plenty of chances to experience the delight that can come through reading and writing.
Two very special guests – Nick Sharratt and Jeremy Strong – have given memorable presentations that the students will never forget. Nick Sharratt is the illustrator of nearly 250 books and the author of around 40. He worked with students in Early Years – Year 2 as well as older budding illustrators in the Secondary school. The queue for his book signing on Tuesday stretched all the way down the corridor, although he did more than sign each book – lucky fans had pictures drawn for them! His engagement with the students was just as colourful as his wonderful illustrations. He called on students to help him read aloud, compose humorous poetry, and even draw facial expressions on pairs of pants!

Jeremy Strong, author of around 100 children’s novels, gave hilarious presentations to students in Years 3-7 from Tuesday to Friday. In his ever comical style, he shared stories about his life and his work, read aloud from his novels, and offered a presentation to staff members about encouraging reluctant readers. Fans of all ages waited in line to have him sign their books...some even brought along entire stacks of books from home, hoping for autographed copies.
Even parents and staff have been invited to join in the excitement – a number of them have volunteered to read aloud to the children during open library sessions and in classes, and teachers are encouraged to read silently along with their students during "Drop Everything and Read". As is also the tradition during Book Week, members of the staff have created posters featuring their favourite childhood books and a Book Fair – also open to the public – offered English books for sale.
It would come as no surprise if one of our St. George's students made the decision to become an author or illustrator this week...thanks to our wonderful, inspiring visitors and the fun of Book Week.
