The British Ambassador Visits St George’s
HE John Marshall, the patron of the school and Her Majesty's Ambassador to the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg gave a talk to our Year 12 and 13 students.
He provided students with an insight into his life before coming to Luxembourg, and told students he wanted to be a diplomat from the age of 16. He spoke of his postings in Senegal, Ethiopia, Malaysia and Japan, tackling issues such as climate change, female mutilation, abuse and corruption amongst others.
The ambassador told the students that his days are extremely diverse; from tele-conferences with the British government in London, to meeting ambassadors from around the world and speaking at events. He also likes to run in his spare time.
He gave an overview of the purpose and activities of the British Embassy, ranging from security, helping British nationals in emergency situations, lobbying to helping a British companies establish trade links and promoting the UK as a tourist destination.
At the end of the talk, the students were then given an opportunity to put questions to the ambassador, such as ‘How long did it take you to adapt in each country you were posted in?’, ‘How does the positioning system work?’ and ‘What is the difference between Nationalism and Patriotism?’
We would like to extend our sincere thanks to the ambassador for making time to speak to our students.
