St George's hosts ECIS Maths Quest 2026
13 May 2026
St George’s hosted the annual ECIS Maths Quest competition from 8-10 May, welcoming 64 Year 6 students from 16 international schools across Europe and the Middle East for a weekend of mathematical challenge, collaboration and friendship.
The competition brought together schools from Oman, Turkey, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, Norway and Sweden, with École Internationale Mondorf-les-Bains joining as a special guest school from Luxembourg. Representing St George’s were Year 6 students Anastasia, Shengrong, Moyi and Chidube.
Maths Quest is a long-running ECIS competition that stretches students’ mathematical thinking through timed individual and team challenges. Throughout the weekend, students tackled problem-solving rounds, team investigations and collaborative activities.
St George’s was due to host the competition in person in May 2020, however the event was cancelled due to Covid-19. The school hosted an online version of Maths Quest the following year – and won. After several years of virtual competitions, in-person events resumed in 2024, with St George’s sending a team to Geneva before offering to host this year’s competition in Luxembourg.
One of the highlights of the weekend was the Maths Trail in the Grund, where teams solved mathematical questions inspired by the architecture, environment and features around them. Another memorable challenge saw mixed-school teams take part in a Construction Challenge, building a model of Luxembourg’s tram system using a ping pong ball as the tram and straws as the tracks.
The Team Investigation rounds gave students a maximum of 20 minutes to solve each problem, with points awarded according to how quickly teams found the solution. The competition also included timed individual and team rounds, creating an exciting and focused atmosphere throughout the weekend.
St George’s student Moyi achieved particular success, finishing as the joint Top Scorer in the Individual Round competition.
The weekend reflected the spirit of St George’s: academic excellence, international friendship, collaboration and student growth. By bringing young mathematicians together from across Europe and the Middle East, Maths Quest gave students the chance to challenge themselves, build confidence and form connections beyond the classroom.
Can you solve these Year 6 maths problems?
