Secondary School celebrates European Day of Languages

26 September 2014

What better place to celebrate the European Day of Languages than at St George’s!

Students and staff in Secondary took part in a variety of activities organised by the Faculty of Modern Foreign Languages and the Faculty of English to promote the diversity of mother tongues. Activities included following a language quest using the iPads, creating animated comic strips on the importance of learning languages, discovering and making recordings of popular French and German songs, taking part in a multilingual spelling competition and learning new languages – Greek, Polish, Farsi and Czech – taught by native speakers in Years 12 and 13.

The day concluded with an exciting performance in French by a local theatre company, La malle à Molière, and with the viewing of ‘Dinner for One’ in different languages.

The dress code? Colours of each student’s home country or a traditional costume, of course!

Mr Foz, Head of Faculty for Modern Foreign Languages, remarked: “Today we celebrate the linguistic diversity at St George’s International School but at the same time in the whole world. On the European Day of Languages we want to promote the importance of learning languages but also celebrate the cultural heritage of all the languages that are spoken in Europe. Languages have always been important and this will not change in the future. Communication is essential for ‘global citizens’ and this is what we are trying to teach to our students.”

Head Teacher of the Secondary school, Mark Fleet, commented: “Learning languages brings many great benefits – it can lead to improved career prospects, wider circles of friends and can improve understanding of cultural differences. As a truly international school in the heart of Europe, we wanted to expose the students to more on the European Day of Languages and have provided a fun-packed day of additional language learning for them.  It’s been a great success and special thanks to all staff and students for participating so actively.”
