Inside Luxembourg: The Throne Change

24 September 2025

A historic day for Luxembourg

Luxembourg is a country that treasures its traditions, and this autumn, we are about to witness a truly historic event: the official change of the Grand Ducal throne. On Friday, 3 October 2025, Grand Duke Henri will formally abdicate and his son, Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume, will become the new Grand Duke of Luxembourg.

His Royal Highness Prince Guillaume visited St George's in 2020 as Hereditary Grand Duke.

Why is this such a special day?

For me, this day is more than just a change in leadership – it’s a living piece of history. I remember the last throne change in 2000, when Grand Duke Jean handed over to his son, Henri. It was a moment that brought the whole country together in celebration and reflection. Even further back, as a very small child, I recall hearing stories about Grand Duchess Charlotte living at Schloss Fischbach – a reminder of how the Grand Ducal family has always been a part of our national identity and personal memories.

It is worth noting that the tradition of abdication in Luxembourg’s Grand Ducal family began with Grand Duchess Charlotte, who voluntarily stepped down in 1964 in favour of her son, Jean. This act set a precedent for peaceful and dignified transitions, which continues to shape our monarchy today.

The Grand Ducal family is a symbol of unity and continuity for Luxembourg. Many of us have grown up seeing Grand Duke Henri at national celebrations, commemorations and even in our schoolbooks. Now, we have the unique chance to witness a peaceful and joyful transition, something that only happens once in a generation.

Celebrations and how to join in

The entire country will be celebrating! There will be official ceremonies in Luxembourg City, including a solemn abdication, a proclamation of the new Grand Duke and a festive parade. Schools, communities and families are encouraged to take part in the festivities.

You can follow the celebrations live and find the official program at www.trounwiessel.lu/fr.html Here you’ll find the livestream of the ceremonies, interviews, behind-the-scenes moments and the full schedule of events. A taste of tradition: Bamkuch (Luxembourgish layer cake)

No Luxembourgish celebration is complete without a slice of Bamkuch – a delicious, festive cake made of many thin layers, often served at weddings and special occasions. Why not try baking it at home to mark this historic day?

You can find a wonderful recipe for Bamkuch with step-by-step photos by Anne’s Kitchen at https://anneskitchen.lu/recipes/bamkuch/

Let’s celebrate this unique moment in Luxembourg’s history together – whether by watching the livestream, joining local festivities, or sharing a slice of Bamkuch with family and friends!
