Inside Luxembourg: Discover the Mullerthal with children

15 April 2026

By Isabelle Frisch-Koopmans

There are places that invite children to explore before you even say a word. The Müllerthal is one of those places – full of winding paths, moss‑covered rocks and the kind of quiet magic that makes families slow down and look around. When my children were younger, we often spent entire spring days there, leaving in the morning and returning only when the sun began to set. We wandered between cool rock passages, listened to the sound of water and discovered tiny caves that felt like secret hideouts. Those long, bright days outdoors remain some of my favourite spring memories.

As April turns into May, the Müllerthal becomes especially beautiful. This week, I’d love to take you into some of the most child‑friendly spots in this region that are perfect for small adventures, fresh air and moments of wonder.

A natural playground for all ages

The Müllerthal Region – often described as Luxembourg’s Little Switzerland – is an exciting destination, not only for adults but also for children. There is so much to discover.

Museums offer workshops where children can learn new things in a playful way. There are indoor and outdoor pools as well as a swimming area in the Echternach lake.  There are trampolines, playgrounds, specially designed trails for children and guided tours through old castles.

Whether you prefer nature, culture, movement, or creativity, there is something for every age and every budget. This is exactly what makes the Müllerthal Region so interesting for families – there is always something to do, no matter the weather.

If you’d like to show your children what the Müllerthal looks like, take a look at this calm, beautiful video of the region here

Family highlights in Luxembourg's Little Switzerland

The Müllerthal Tourist Office has created a wonderful overview of the best places for children, from easy walks to exciting rock formations. You can find the full list here. It offers fantastic ideas for indoor and outdoor activities, suitable for every age and for all kinds of weather.

Discovery Tours with Mia

One of the most charming offers for children in the Müllerthal is Mia’s Discovery Tours. Mia guides families through the region with playful tasks, stories and small challenges that make exploring even more fun. These tours are designed especially for young adventurers with child‑friendly routes, fun missions and riddles, and learning through movement and discovery. They are perfect for a half‑day or full‑day family outing. You can find Mia’s tours here.

Heringer Millen – The Visitor Centre

Heringer Millen in the village of Müllerthal is a perfect starting point for families. At its visitor centre you can learn about the region, see old milling tools and pick up child‑friendly walking suggestions. It also has a nice restaurant and fantastic playground for children.

Schiessentümpel waterfall

The most iconic spot in the Müllerthal — a stone bridge, a gentle waterfall, and a magical atmosphere.

Wollefsschlucht (Wolf’s Gorge)

This narrow rock passage, which can be found on the E1 hike between Echternach and Berdorf, feels like a fairy tale. Children love the echoing sounds and the cool air.

Short hiking Loops

There are several 30- to 60-minute loops on the Müllerthal Trail with caves, bridges, rocks and streams that are perfect for little legs and big imaginations.

Barefoot Path

The Müllerthal also offers accessible or low‑threshold activities. A lovely option is the Barefoot Path in Medernach (Kengert) – a sensory trail where children can walk on grass, stones, wood and sand, discovering different textures with their feet. More information is available here.

A Mini Adventure Walk

Whether you visit the Müllerthal or simply explore a forest near your home, you can turn it into a small adventure:

  • Look for rock shapes — what do they remind you of?
  • Listen for water
  • Touch moss and compare textures
  • Find a “secret passage” between trees or rocks
  • Collect one small natural treasure

Children love exploring when they feel like discoverers.
