Human Library explores identity
4 March 2026
Year 4 held its first Human Library on Friday, 27 February, as part of a PSHE unit on national and cultural belonging. The exercise built on explorations of the question “Where are you from?” and how our identities are shaped by culture, nationality, language and lived experiences.
During the event, parent and staff volunteers became “human books,” each sharing short personal stories connected to themes such as growing up between cultures, moving countries, family traditions, or feeling a sense of belonging in more than one place.
Students browsed the Human Library “shelf,” selected a story title that interested them and engaged in five‑minute conversations with the volunteers.
The Year 4 children were deeply engaged, curious and wonderfully respectful. They asked thoughtful, insightful questions that showed genuine interest in the experiences shared. The Human Library enriched the children’s understanding of the complexity of cultural and national identity and helped them appreciate the many ways our backgrounds shape who we are.
