Geographers explore urban regeneration
22 April 2026
Year 12 students visited Belval on 14 April 2026 exploring urban regeneration through a real-world case study as part of the new Edexcel International A‑level geography syllabus.
Belval was once the centre of Luxembourg’s steel industry, but today it stands as one of the country’s most ambitious regeneration projects. During the visit, students observed how the former industrial site has been transformed into a modern, multifunctional district that combines education, business, culture and sustainable urban living.
Students explored how historical features, including the iconic blast furnaces, have been preserved and repurposed alongside contemporary developments such as the University of Luxembourg campus, research institutions, housing, cultural venues and green spaces. This contrast helped bring to life key themes from the Edexcel International A‑level syllabus, particularly urban change, regeneration, sustainability and economic transition.
The visit encouraged students to think critically about the forms, aims and impacts of urban regeneration. Discussions focused on questions such as who benefits from redevelopment, how former industrial land can be reused sustainably, and the social and economic challenges that can arise during regeneration projects.
Students also examined Belval’s role as a growing knowledge and innovation hub, considering how regeneration can attract investment, create employment opportunities and support a diverse urban community.
