Equalities Committee celebrates Pride Month
24 April 2024
St George’s Secondary Equalities Committee was established in 2019 to raise awareness of diversity in all its forms. Throughout the school year, the student-run committee organises activities and information in Secondary to bring attention to groups that experience inequality. So far this year, the students have celebrated Black History Month and International Women’s Day, and have organised activities for Year 8’s Diversity Day.
For the last few years, the Equalities Committee has organised St George’s Pride Month during April, rather than the traditional month of June. This is because the fantastic, dedicated members are from Years 11, 12 and 13, and are busy with their exams in June.
The current members include:
- Arina S (Year 12), Equalities Prefect
- Esa H (Year 13)
- Sasha P (Year 13)
- Tanishka K (Year 11)
- Elena W (Year 11)
Pride Month commemorates years of struggle for civil rights and the ongoing pursuit for equal justice under the law for LGBTQ+ individuals. It is usually celebrated around the world in June in recognition of the Stonewall protests in 1969 in response to a police raid of a gay bar in New York City.
Pride Month celebrates the accomplishments of LGBTQ+ individuals and draws attention to the inequalities and persecution which still exist around the world. It is these two aspects of Pride that we have portrayed in our display, as well as showing our support by decorating the school with Pride flags.
"At St George's, we foster a community where students, staff, and parents collaborate to create a secure environment for learning. Our commitment extends to embracing individuals of diverse races, ethnicities, religions, gender identities, sexual orientations, and other unique attributes, ensuring that everyone feels valued, belongs and are accepted. During Pride Month, we not only honour the history and contributions of the LGBTQ+ community but also actively strive to promote diversity and inclusivity within our school and beyond. This dedication remains integral to our ethos throughout the academic year."
Claire Simmonds, Head Teacher (Secondary)
‘This year, as Equalities Committee Prefect, I have been lucky to organise St. George’s Pride Month, for which I thank my fantastic committee and our supportive teachers. I hope that this helps raise awareness of the achievements and ongoing struggles of the LGBTQ+ community around the world.’
