35-year rugby home record intact
15 January 2025
St George’s Under 16s made a bold statement on the growing Luxembourg rugby scene triumphing over Walferdange on Saturday, 11 January, and defending their long-standing unbeaten home record.
The team, composed of a dynamic mix of Years 9, 10 and 11 students, sported red and white jerseys borrowed from Rugby Club Luxembourg. In a spirited display, the boys showcased resilience and teamwork, overcoming early challenges to secure a commanding 25-10 victory.
The match kicked off under chilly conditions with Ben P confidently fielding the first ball. Despite initial pressure and conceding an early try, the team maintained composure. Hard-hitting tackles by Freddie DF, Gabriel B and Sufian D helped steady the defence. Gabriel’s swift response with a try levelled the score at 5-5, setting the tone for a determined comeback.
Momentum shifted in St George's favour as Gabriel struck again, followed by a powerhouse try from Joao M, who bulldozed through the defence. The squad's cohesion continued to shine as standout performances from Hamilton M, Oliver B and Konstantinos V kept the team driving forward.
Walferdange briefly levelled the match before halftime at 10-10, but St George's emerged stronger in the second half. Joao secured his second try after the break, while Ben P added another to cap off a stellar performance.
As the final whistle blew, St George's celebrated the preservation of their 35-year unbeaten home record, demonstrating both sportsmanship and skill.
