Year 4 students stepped back in time to experience the bustling world of early medieval trade as part of an exciting humanities topic on the Vikings. Transforming the classroom into a lively market, children took on the roles of Vikings and Anglo-Saxons, immersing themselves in historical role play.
Each group elected a leader, crafted goods for exchange and devised thoughtful trading strategies. They negotiated the value of their items, such as agreeing that five apples might be worth one fish, and prepared for their journey across the cold northern seas. The Viking traders then 'sailed' to Britain, where they joined Anglo-Saxon markets to barter animal hides, horns and fish for apples, corn and livestock.
Trades were conducted with mutual respect and fairness, reflecting the importance of cooperation and diplomacy in historical commerce. At the end of the activity, students reflected on their experiences, took stock of their trades and shared their satisfaction with the outcomes.
This hands-on learning experience not only deepened their understanding of Viking and Anglo-Saxon life but also encouraged teamwork, strategic thinking and empathy. It was a fantastic afternoon of historical discovery.
