Year 5 students host a dazzling performance
31 March 2015
The students in Year 5 put on a truly excellent show on Tuesday, one that they can certainly be very proud of!
“The Snow Queen” tells the story of an evil sorceress who captures little boys and freezes their hearts. In the play, she targets a little boy named Kay who is mesmerised by her spell and is held prisoner in her castle.
His foster sister Gerda leaves home to find him, armed with a single rose from her Granny. On the way she gets imprisoned by the Flower Witch in the Magical Garden and robbed in the Frozen Forest. She finally arrives at The Snow Queen’s castle thanks to the help of a friendly group of crows, Prince Crispin and Princess Cristina, and the wise Witch of Finland.
The moral of the story – to trust in the power of love, which triumphs over all.
With a complex plot, eleven original songs to memorise, multiple scenery changes and lots of dialogue, “The Snow Queen” took many weeks of preparation and practice.
The students did an outstanding job with the musical numbers; they demonstrated lovely singing voices in the chorus and excellent vocal solos and duets. Crowd-pleasers included the refrain “a little bit of butter on a toasted bun” and the ballads “Hope is Never Dead” and “Travelling Song”.
The children profited from wonderfully constructed, colourful scenery and well-crafted costumes which added to the spectacle.
Special thanks from the students went to Mrs Tyrrell and Mrs Berg of the Art Department for their terrific scenery, Mrs Kearey for the excellent costumes, Mr Heley for his “polished” piano accompaniment, Miss Carty for the creation of the booklets and of course the Year 5 teachers and parents.
Congratulations to the Year 5 students on a job well done!
