Underground adventure for Year 4

Year 4 classes visited the Musée National des Mines in Luxembourg on Friday, 14 November 2025, bringing their Humanities and Science learning about Earth’s natural resources to life.
The children stepped back in time to experience life as miners, drilling holes in rock, setting and ‘detonating’ dynamite and mining iron ore with rock hammers. They heard fascinating stories about the mine manager’s white cave office, horses carting three tons of ore, and how strikes for better conditions shaped modern working life.
Highlights included riding in a mine cart, pushing carts full of rocks (successfully!) and taking home a piece of mined iron. The children were curious, respectful and fully engaged – an amazing day of hands-on learning!
