Year 4 students brush up on oral health

Year 4 students learnt about the structure of a tooth, the different types of teeth and their functions during an oral health session with a dental nurse on Thursday, 18 September 2025.

Students also learned about the importance of daily dental hygiene practices, including brushing and flossing to remove plaque build-up. The dental nurse explained how plaque, if left untreated, can lead to cavities and gum disease. Limiting sugar intake was highlighted as another key factor in preventing tooth decay.

To reinforce these lessons, students took part in a hands-on challenge. Two pupils from each class were selected to compete against their teachers in a tooth-cleaning contest. All participants dyed their teeth blue to simulate plaque and then brushed for three minutes to see who could remove the stain most effectively. The activity emphasized the need to clean all three sides of each tooth – front, back and chewing surface.

The event generated plenty of enthusiasm and while everyone successfully removed the blue stain, the student team emerged as the winners. The challenge provided a memorable and practical demonstration of proper brushing technique and the importance of consistent oral care.

Year 4 left the session with a deeper understanding of how to maintain healthy teeth and a renewed commitment to brushing, flossing and making smart dietary choices.
