When physical education meets French

4 February 2026

Year 3 students experienced a lesson with a difference when their PE and French teachers teamed up for a cross-curricular lesson.

Learning French vocabulary through physical activity, the lesson was designed to develop physical coordination, teamwork and accurate football passing techniques, while simultaneously reinforcing French language acquisition through movement.

The students learned vocabulary for five different rooms in a house. These rooms were then created in the gym with cones and pictures.

When the name of the room was called out in French, pairs of students worked together to pass a ball to each other to enter the room.

This approach promoted active learning, allowing pupils to associate language with action, making learning meaningful, fun and developmentally appropriate for Year 3 learners.
