Symmetry, strategy and Swiss chocolate

14 May 2025

Year 6 students Aadi, Alex, Eytan and Tomas represented St George's at the ECIS Maths Quest competition, hosted by Ecolint School in Geneva, from 9 to 11 May.
The event brought together 80 students from 20 schools across Europe and the Middle East for three days of mathematical challenges, strategic thinking and collaborative problem solving.

Throughout the weekend, students worked intensively in their teams to tackle a wide range of puzzles and calculations. One of the highlights was the construction challenge, which required not only teamwork within their own groups but also collaboration across teams, encouraging communication, creativity and shared problem solving.

A real standout moment of the trip was visiting the CERN Science Gateway, where students took part in a specially designed maths trail. Exploring the world-renowned scientific facility added an extra layer of excitement and inspiration to the experience.

Beyond the competition, students soaked up some Swiss culture during visits to Geneva and Nyon. From sampling delicious Swiss chocolate to navigating the incredibly reliable train system, the trip offered a wonderful blend of academic challenge and cultural discovery.

While the British School of Muscat took home the top prize, St George's placed 11th overall and returned with a sense of pride, new friendships and a wealth of experience. It was a brilliant opportunity to stretch their mathematical thinking, work together under pressure and, most importantly, have lots of fun!

We’re incredibly proud of our students for their enthusiasm, teamwork and the way they represented our school throughout the event.
