St George's World Maths Day 2015

20 October 2015

Students from Year 8 have been designing Maths board games. Their brief? Design a board game which practises and reinforces a Maths skill and is suitable for children in Years 4, 5 and 6.

During the afternoon of World Maths Day, Wednesday 14th October, students set up the games in the Hamilius Hall and students from Years 4 to 6 were invited to join in and play them.

Here are some comments from the Year 8 students:

“It was a really exciting afternoon when I was playing a game with smaller kids than me, whilst showing them what to do and make them have a great moment: the feeling I gave them is the one from then wanting to win.” - Alexandre

“World maths day this year was a big success, not only did we enjoy it ourselves in Secondary, we also had the pleasure of getting together with the Primary students. It was amazing be able to explain things to other people to improve their understandings and also even ourselves.” – Madeleine

“This year’s World Maths was a great success. I really enjoyed meeting all the little children and teaching them how to play our games. I also really enjoyed making the board games. It was really fun going back to Primary and see how it is now.” - Sjoerd

“I’m pretty new to the school and in my old schools there was nothing were secondary bonded with the primary school. I had a lot of fun watching as the younger children played the game that I spent ages on. At first I thought no one would like my game but when I got my game out I had queues of children. The longer I’m in this school the more welcome I feel.” - James

“I thought it was a very nice experience to bond with the primary children and to teach them a game that they never heard of before. I also thought that it was nice experience to be able to teach yourself.” - Wesley

“It was a great experience to spend time with the primary students! We were able to each them and make Maths fun. I was impressed how great they were in maths and especially how fast. I enjoyed spending time with them. I hope we get the opportunity again sometime!” - Maxine

“I really loved seeing how they responded to us and our games, and hung on our every word. It was great explaining everything and they were all so good at mental maths!” - Amelie
