St George's welcomes guest from Malawi and Unity Foundation Representative
11 January 2016
This morning St George’s Primary students were extremely pleased to welcome a very special visitor from Malawi alongside a representative from Unity Foundation*. Mrs. Maina Mkandawire, works with Bambino Schools who aim to provide a high standard of education for children of diverse backgrounds in Malawi. A proportion of the money that St George’s raises for Unity Foundation goes to support Bambino Schools. The presentation was a real eye opener; the Primary students had the opportunity to hear first-hand the benefits of their fundraising initiatives and what children in Malawi go through on a day to day basis. Some students gasped when they heard about the extremely high temperatures, the awfully long distances some Malawian students have to walk to school and the scarcity of stationary available - to name just a few.
A big thank you goes to Maina and to Unity foundation, opportunities like these really benefit the students - not only does it allow the students to realise how fortunate they are but it also puts all the hard work the students do to raise money into perspective.
* Unity Foundation is a non-profit organisation committed to empowering communities through education. St George’s Primary council chose this charity as their main one to raise money for throughout the academic year.
