St George's Under 9s make cricket debut

St George's made its Under 9 cricketing debut in the Luxembourg Cricket Federation's tournament on Saturday, 20 September 2025.
The sun was shining and our Year 4 and 5 students were excited about the prospect of a whole day of cricket. The LCF had two teams entered in addition to the travelling teams from Antwerp and Frankfurt.
It was Luxembourg Blue who the students faced off first in the field with Yuvan and Freddie being the standout bowlers. When it was time to bat, Jasraj showed his experience and batted well, but it unfortunately wasn't enough to chase down the target of 84.
St George's next opponents were the travelling side of Antwerp against whom we fielded much better and two strong overs at the end from Lanah and Jasraj kept AICC to 71. Lanah continued to bat with confidence and was assisted by George to get their total to 22. Unfortunately, it was another loss but the group of eight were cooperating well together and learning ball by ball thanks to Mr Mills, Mr Cope and the family of supporters.
This showed in the third game of the day against Luxembourg Red in which we batted first. Jasraj started strong followed by a wonderful partnership between Krishna and Yuvan, who hit the first six of St George's cricketing history. A total of 62 looked defendable and with Eddie starring as wicket-keeper the group had confidence. This translated in the field as George and Yuvan both took a run out each. It was neck and neck, and with 1 needed off the last ball even the amazing fielder that is Nicolas couldn't stop the run.
The final game was against top-of-the-table BWCV Germany who batted very well but not without Eddie claiming St George's first bowling wicket thanks to a great catch from George. The total proved too big even with some excellent batting from Freddie scoring 9 off 14.
George C, Eddie S, Yuvan K, Frederick G, Lanah P, Krishna K and Nicolas K return without a win but were rewarded for their positive attitude with a trophy for Spirit of Cricket and a million questions such as "When is the next tournament?" and "Can we host a tournament in the Elsy Jacobs gym?" These will be answered in due course but for now the team deserves to be commended for their efforts and attitude on a long day in the sun at the Pierre Werner Cricket Ground.
