St George's International School Luxembourg celebrates St George's Day!
24 April 2014
St George’s Day – 23rd April – is a very special day at St George’s International School Luxembourg! School leaders and a number of invited guests from the local community were all welcomed to take part in the traditional festivities of the day. Year 6 students did a wonderful job throughout the day by entertaining the guests; they lent a hand by demonstrating classic English games like ‘splat the rat’, ‘jump rope’, ‘penny roll’, ‘hopscotch, and ‘pin the tail on the dragon’. Year 2 students performed a traditional English song and dance called ‘Oats and Beans and Barley Grow’ and Year 4 students put on a fantastic performance of various sketches and humorous poetry which had the guests in stitches.
After the main programme of games and performances, guests were invited to partake in an English afternoon Tea with all the traditional delicacies, such as homemade scones with strawberry jam and clotted cream, delicious freshly squeezed lemonade, cucumber sandwiches, sausage rolls and, of course, English tea. Each guest was seated next to a Year 6 student who made a positive impression with their ability to hold polite and engaging conversation.
Throughout the Tea Party guests were treated to live instrumental music played by the students. They were also able to vote for their preferred dragon drawing – as is tradition, the design with the most votes will be featured on the cover of this year’s Primary yearbook. All students in Years 1-6 contributed an original dragon design.
Aside from playing a variety of games themselves, younger students were also invited to a sweet sale, where students in Year 6 offered a mixture of traditional English sweets (such as jelly babies, flying saucers, rock and jazzles) for 1 euro.
After a very successful day St George’s International School is proud to have kept this tradition of celebrating St George’s Day going for 12 years running. Many thanks to all those who attended and to all the staff and students for their hard work in making this day so special!
