St George's in 3rd place in COBIS Debate Competition

09 February 2016

The St George's Debating team recently travelled to Mexico to compete in the COBIS World Debating Championships. The students enjoyed visiting ancient historical sites in and around Mexico City before competing in two days of rigorous, competitive and heated debate on subjects from the conflict in the Middle East to the funding of university education.

Over the 2 days they competed against 14 other schools from around the world (as well as jet lag and high altitude) and excelled in 6 debates losing only 2,one to the eventual 2016 tournament champions from the English International College in Marbella,  the other to last years World Champions Edron Academy Mexico.

The team fought their way through to the the semi finals of the Cup (Higher Teir) competition before been  knocked out by the eventual tournament winners from the English College in Marbella on a very close split decision points win. An overall 3rd place finish was just reward for a tremendous amount of effort and hard work over the two days of competition but also the weeks of planning and preparation beforehand.

Congratulations and thanks to Joe, Alanna, Isabel and Rana for their tremendous fortitude and efforts in reaching the semi finals. The team would also like to thank both their coaches Mr Todd and Ms Rigby for their support, guidance and encouragement.

 Well done!
