St George's First Super-curricular Lecture Program (SLP)
27 February 2017
The first lecture of the newly formed St George’s Super-curricular Lecture Program (SLP) took place on Monday, 27th February in the Zinnen Building. As part of the new student leadership team initiative, the talk focused upon medical case studies. The event was a great success, both students and parents alike were able to participate and enjoy the insightful presentations.
First, Mrs Sonia Alvarez – an active, volunteer, paramedic and firefighter educated us about the functioning and structure of the emergency services in Luxembourg, followed by a demonstration of treatment of an individual injured by a car accident.
Following that, Mrs Lynda Reid – a physiotherapist and expert in pain management, described what pain is and the biochemistry involved in it. In the second part of her talk, she described current approaches to the diagnosis and treatment of pain.
In the final presentation, Mrs Lisa Dishman – A general practitioner in family medicine, discussed the different types of diabetes, symptoms, diagnosis and treatment. The session was concluded by an active participation of the audience in case study-solving.
I would like to use this opportunity to thank, once again, the notable speakers: Mrs. Lisa Dishman, Mrs. Lynda Reid and Mrs. Sonia Alvarez for contributing their time and sharing their passions and knowledge with us.
Thank you also to Mr. Shaw and Mr. Fleet, for helping to organise the event and supporting the SLT team, as well as Veerle, Dillon and Alex – Sixth Form students who have helped in publicising the event. Certificates of attendance will be distributed in the upcoming days.
