On Friday 30th October the first faculty day of the year for the Secondary school took place. The joint venture between the Maths and MFL faculties was loosely based around the theme of the UK television show ‘The Apprentice’. Each of the four houses was divided into four sub teams and each had a team leader. In the morning the sixteen team leaders were summoned to the ‘Board Room’ to receive their instructions from Dr Barkei, who was assuming the role of Lord Alan Sugar. The teams were asked to create a business plan for either a new drink or a new breakfast cereal that was to be launched in Zurich, Switzerland. Each team was given the morning only to come up with a product, brand name, logo, advert and business plan detailing costs, prices and various other figures pertinent to the task. Then, in the afternoon, each house needed to select one team to go forward and pitch the product to a panel. To make the task as realistic as possible, the students were given a free reign, the team leaders managed and led their teams in their own unique way, their was minimal teacher input and the panel the teams were pitching to were members of the school governing body, chosen so that the teams were pitching to unfamiliar people, as in the real business world. To add to this, the pitches were broadcast live to the school so that each team could feel a part of the process.
Throughout the day the team leaders did a phenomenal job and demonstrated their calm, collective, organizational skills and managed a small group, extracting the very best from each individual. All students, whether in Year 7 or above, participated wholly and came up with some remarkable products. Many of the package designs looked so professional that they would be most befitting of a place on the shop shelf. All teams gelled and worked harmoniously bringing out the very best in everyone.
At the end of the day the panel had a tough decision to make as all teams conducted themselves with such business maturity, were passionate about their product, had clearly researched and compiled an effective business plan and answered some pretty tough questions in the Q&A session following their presentation. There could only be one winner however, and this accolade went to Water, although today was a day in which all students of St George’s came out on top.
