Ice-Space and Finite Resources sustainability theme launches

St George’s will launch its new sustainability theme “Ice-Space and Finite Resources” on Tuesday, 13 October, beginning a year of student learning and innovation focused on closed-loop systems and the responsible use of finite resources. 

Working with the International Polar Foundation (IPF), the launch will include a screening of 2050, the documentary by Eric Goens and Kristof Van Den Bergh exploring the impacts of climate change on polar regions and humanity’s role in shaping the planet’s future. 

Students will also hear from Nicolas Van Hoecke and Henri Robert of the International Polar Foundation about Princess Elisabeth Antarctica, the world’s first zero-emission polar research station, and plans for the new Andromeda Earth Observatory. 

The project will also be supported by ESERO Luxembourg (European Space Education Resource Office), bringing space science and Earth observation into students’ learning. Through ESERO’s Climate Detectives programme, students will investigate environmental questions using Earth-observation and Copernicus satellite data, helping them connect changes in oceans and ice with the technologies scientists use to monitor our planet from space. 

These ideas will feed into the St George’s Sustainability Competition, sponsored by Voltmax Luxembourg, challenging students to develop sustainable solutions for researchers working with limited resources at the Andromeda Earth Observatory and to consider how these ideas might transfer to future space exploration. 

Throughout the year, students will continue this learning in the school’s new STEM and sustainability labs, exploring aquaponics, hydroponics, composting, water reuse and other circular systems. 

Building on St George’s Ocean Gatekeepers work, the theme connects oceans, polar ice and space while asking students an important question: how can we design systems that help people and the planet thrive when resources are limited?
