Students moved by human rights trip
7 October 2026
Amnesty International is a renowned global organisation committed to the fight for human rights to dignity and respect and our school is proud to call ourselves a contributor to this noble cause for four years now. Over the years our school has led multiple initiatives on behalf of Amnesty Luxembourg – the Luxembourgish branch of the institution – including but not limited to bake sales, fundraisers, assemblies, and launching numerous campaigns such as Piece of Pizza Per Parchment in which students of our school came together to write over 70 letters to various world leaders calling them out on their violations of human rights.
Most recently, St George’s Amnesty Club is thrilled to present to you our latest project: a six-day human rights journey to Geneva, the heartland of the Red Cross, and Milan, a hotbed for international migration into Europe. Our club, composed of 10 students and our leader Ms McHugh — along with the school’s DEIJ Coordinator Mr Neumann — have been transformed by this voyage. In Geneva, we made a visit to the Red Cross Museum, stood beneath the symbolic Broken Chair and attended a lecture by Gambian representative at the United Nations, Kemo Fatty.
In Milan, we had the privilege of being welcomed at the Amnesty Italy Milan headquarters where we met S.O.S. Méditerranée member Tommaso. From him, we were introduced to the complex issue of international law on migration, the hurdles of working for a non-profit organization, and the process of carrying out rescue missions in the Mediterranean Sea. Through our meeting with two members of the non-profit organization ResQ at a Milan refugee welcome center, we learned about the legislative and bureaucratic struggles that refugees face once they’ve reached Italy. The following day, we met with a journalist who had covered the conditions of refugees being kept in immigrant detention center, exposing us to the difficult circumstances they are forced to endure.
This experience was deeply enriching to all of us and we are extremely grateful to our school, Erasmus and our team leader Ms McHugh for helping us make this trip happen.
