COBIS Debating World Championships 2019, Bucharest
11 February 2019
The school debating team has returned from the COBIS Debating World Championships held in Bucharest last week. Sixteen schools from as far afield as Dubai, Mexico and Nigeria as well as Europe competed in 2 days of intense debate covering a multitude of topics including The Future of Artificial Intelligence, Nature verses Nurture, The Role of Sport in the 21st Century and Should Mankind Continue to Explore Outer Space?
The relatively inexperienced team from St George’s excelled in the competition reaching the semi-finals of the Plate Competition only to be eliminated by the eventual Plate winners from Mexico. All six students performed exceptionally well across all the debates, against very difficult opponents and more seasoned debaters, in particular Alexander who made Team of the Tournament in the 'Showcase' debate.
The students made many new friends, experienced some of the scenic delights and cuisine of Bucharest city itself and can feel justly proud of their achievements. Special thanks should also go to their coaches, Mr Todd and Ms Chernin who continued to motivate the team throughout the five days of competition.
