Chicks delight in EYFS

4 June 2025

Students in Early Years have been learning about the life cycle of a chicken, from eggs, to hatching and rapid growth. The students nurtured the eggs for more than 20 days, keeping them warm in incubators, before they started hatching on 9 May.

"The whole chick hatching experience boosts morale and stimulates social interaction. It was such an exciting educational experience for all our students at school, particularly for younger students," said Mira Thomson, EYFS Lead Teacher.

The students discovered what happens in each stage of a chicken's life, discussed how much the chicks had grown and changed, and learned key vocabularly. "It is an amazing experience that encourages learning, covering science, life cycles and caring for animals, and can be shared by the whole school community," she said.

The chicks attracted attention from other year groups in Primary and Secondary, as well as staff and students in after-school clubs. When the time is right, some of the chickens will be rehomed by staff members, while others will remain at St George's.
