Ada Lovelace highlights women in STEM

16 Oct 2024

Tuesday, 8 October 2024 marked Ada Lovelace Day, which is an international celebration of the achievements of women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and encourages more women to pursue careers in these fields.

To celebrate Ada Lovelace Day in Secondary, the Equalities Committee organised various activities.

Sixth Form further mathematics students had the opportunity to talk to a St George's alumnus, Emilie Olufsen, who attended university for mathematics and statistics. During the video call Emilie talked about her university experience and career, shared tips on examinations preparations and answered students’ questions. Students found this opportunity incredibly inspiring and we are all very thankful to Emilie for finding the  time in her busy schedule for this event

The Equalities Committee developed and delivered workshops for Key Stage 3 students, which covered biographies of some of the most influential female mathematicians and scientists, including Katherine Johnson, Rosalind Franklin and Sophie Germain. These sessions raised important themes such as underrepresentation of women in the STEM labour force and gender bias in these fields.
