A Different Approach with Karl Nova
06 May 2019
What a day! Karl’s enthusiasm for poetry is truly infectious.
He started his visit with a presentation where he told the students when he first became interested in RAP (Rhythm and Poetry); performed his ‘worst rap ever’ about Seven Up; led them in a group performance of I’m Gonna Make It”; and invited them to give him words for a freestyle rap, suggestions for which included pelican, peanuts, turtle and spotlight!
Later he led workshops for students from years 7 and 8, inspiring them to use a refrain as the basis for poetry. Even the most reluctant writer participated and many allowed him to perform their poems aloud. Every poem was unique and Karl was always on hand to offer advice and encouragement.
Karl Nova’s story should be shared with everyone (specifically how he dealt with his problems in life and how he overcame them through poetry) – year 8
Karl showed us a different way to approach poetry – year 9
I enjoyed the assembly because Karl told good stories and he is funny which made it more exciting – year 7
