Ben Crotty
Ben Crotty graduated from St George's in 2015...
I was born in England, but moved to Luxembourg at a very young age. Unfortunately, I experienced bullying at my first school, so my family moved me to St George's because it has a zero-tolerance policy for bullying.
At the age of 16, I decided not to attend college or university but to start working. My father's brokerage jobs had already influenced me to pursue a career in banking and I would often sit on the trading floor doing homework after school, absorbing the mayhem, the noise, the numbers being screamed and the shouting. I was hooked on the energy, the deal-making and the substantial sums of money involved. I wanted it all.
My first job in finance was at Svenska Handelsbank where I was an assistant administrator in the post room, archiving documents. I was 17 years old. After six months, I secured an internship at Finacore Tradition, learning to trade bonds through Bloomberg.
Subsequently, a full-time job opportunity emerged through a contact at Finacore Tradition, and I assumed a role in the DMC (document management centre) room at IFDS Luxembourg. After only eight days, I was asked to work in the Transfer Agency dealing team, but five months later my role was terminated. Despite this setback, I was even more motivated to prove I had what it takes to work in finance.
I decided to cold call banks and visited a few in person in search of interviews or meetings with HR about potential opportunities. It paid dividends and I landed job interviews with J.P. Morgan, BNP Paribas and Deutsche Bank.
BNP Paribas hired me and I spent two years there as a Client Account Manager for the funds dealing service and a further eight months as a business change manager for FDS (funds dealing services), with a two-year stint as a Custody Client Account Manager and championing their securities lending business.
After my time at BNP Paribas, I secured a role at J.P. Morgan to advance my career and it has certainly delivered in giving me my next challenge. As a Client Service Manager for JP Morgan I act as a single coordination and escalation point across all securities services products offered to our institutional clients. This involves meeting with existing clients to understand their short- and long-term strategic goals.
Throughout my career, I've been most proud of my ability to foster long-term partnerships with clients by delivering tailored solutions, understanding their needs and providing exceptional service.
I like sharing my story with students and young people in Luxembourg to motivate them to pursue careers even if they haven't attended university or college.
