Find out what's happening at St George's!
St George’s Debating Team returned from the 2020 COBIS World Debating Championships in Marbella as tournament runners up, the first time St George’s have reached the final and subsequently their best ever finish in the competition.
Building on a foundation of experienced debaters and some embarking on their first ever competition the team swept through Day 1 undefeated, seeing off challenges from Gran Canaria, Mexico and the Czech Republic. Day 2 saw the team defeat Denmark and Venezuela on the way to the final against The Netherlands. Two days of intense competition debating subjects as varied as the Ethics of Reality TV, Using Direct Action to Affect Political Change and Veganism, the team performed extremely well in the final debate on Negative and Positive Economic Growth as a Means to Avert Climate Change. The decision was a split points decision from the three judges with St George’s narrowly missing out on been crowned champions for 2020.
Needless to say the whole school are very proud of the team, Mr Todd and Ms Chernin, the school’s debating coaches who accompanied the students on the five day trip to Spain are also very proud of the teams achievements. In particular, Mariya M, who in her first ever competitive debating tournament won Silver Medal in the Best Individual Debater category, a wonderful personal achievement.
Sadly the team say goodbye to Alastair, Liaquat and Elize who will leave St George’s at the end of the year after successfully competing in many overseas competitions for the past three years, they have served as extremely valuable members of Debate Club and have finished their debating careers at St George’s on a real high.
