Find out what's happening at St George's!
Last week members of the St George’s Debating Club travelled to Bucharest for the annual Sir Winston Churchill European Schools Debating Competition. The team debated a range of topics including social media, vegetarianism the environment, and whether mankind has a bright future against fellow schools from around Europe. St George’s finished top of the qualifying rounds with three wins out of three, the only team to do so. Having then breezed through the quarter finals St George’s finally me their match against the host school from Bucharest where they lost their semi-final in a very tightly fought contest on the subject of whether Europe should become a Super State.
All members of the team performed exceptionally well and can be justifiably proud of their achievements, as their debating coaches, Mr Todd & Ms Chernin certainly are. Following the competition the students were treated to a tour of Bucharest, taking in the Presidential Palace as well as some shopping and other cultural highlights and traditional Romanian cuisine .
Next stop for the Debate Club is the COBIS World Championships in Marbella, Spain in February where the team hope to improve their position as successive semi-finalists and hopefully go one better this time around.
