On Tuesday 8th October, students in secondary celebrated ‘Lovelace Day’. Named after Ada Lovelace, a prominent female mathematician and the first computer programmer, the day is aimed at raising awareness of women in the STEM subjects- Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.
Students presented a whole school assembly that included talks on Ada Lovelace and Sophie Germain (another famous mathematician) as well as an overview on the shortage of women in STEM subjects and careers. The audience was also treated with two videos starring the students. The first was a humorous look back to long ago in the past, girls where treated differently to boys. The second was a publicity advert about how several of our female students feel about STEM.
Finally, the Year 9 girls treated the audience to a live song and dance to their very own ‘STEM’ song.
