Last week, students took part in the UKMT Team Maths Challenge event in Oxford. The team from St George’s consisted of Alexander and Stefan in Year 8 and Macarena and Bhoomi in Year 9. The event took place in the Andrew Wiles Building at Oxford University and students had the privilege of being able to sit in the maths lecture theatre and experience for a short while what it is like for a student of the university. After marvelling at the many wonderful mathematical displays, the team spent many hours engaged in challenging activities and problem solving tasks. The competition was tough, but thanks to excellent teamwork and determination, St George’s finished the competition in sixth place (out of 32 schools), our best result in many years of entering this competition.
During our free time, the students were able to visit much of the city, including the castle and several university buildings. We even visited some of the filming locations used in the Harry Potter films.
