After a delayed start, the 2021 Merite Jeunesse expedition season finally began in late April with our Silver Award students taking part in their practice adventurous journey. In perfect weather conditions all the groups successfully navigated their way from Echternach to Niklosbierg Reservoir over the course of 3 days. Each team demonstrated the ability to map read, plan safe and effective routes and cook meals using standard camping equipment. Unfortunately, due to COVID restrictions, camping overnight wasn't possible, however this is planned for their assessed expeditions which will add another dimension that I know the students are looking forward to. The Bronze Award groups were the next to follow, hiking from Mompach to Bollendorf. The students all worked extremely well and demonstrated excellent teamwork along their route. Given this was their first experience I was very impressed with their resilience and attitude, hopefully the sense of achievement they felt at the end made it all worth the effort. Our final group to hit the hiking trails of Luxembourg was our Gold Award students. The most challenging of the awards meant their days and distances covered were longer. However, once again the St George's students showed their grit and determination to get the finish line. Covering approximately 75-80 km over 4 days in high temperatures was certainly a fantastic feat. All the groups will now perform their assessed expeditions in October later this year, hopefully the experience has whetted their appetite for more and I cannot wait to see them all flourish.
Merite Jeunesse will be running next year for all 3 awards. There are restrictions on age and numbers, please do refer to the club's brochure that will be available soon on MSP. Any questions can be raised through the school's Clubs Secretary via firstname.lastname@example.org.
