Futsal team shows great courage
St George's Minimes Futsal team competed in the first round of the LASEL Futsal championship on Thursday, 27 March. Our team was made up of Years 7 and 8 students, as we couldn’t bring Year 9s due to Taster Week. We were at something of a disadvantage from the beginning, but the boys put up a great fight.
We played our first game against Lycee Atert Redange who were on average ‘8 feet taller than us’ but we showed it’s not the size of the dragon in the fight but the fight in the gragon. Elias was outstanding in goal and made seven quality saves and we counter attacked with 1 minute left when captain Juani laid the ball off to Harry who played in Rafael to give us an unexpected 1-0 lead, which we protected bravely.
We followed this up with a straightforward win against the European School where Juan, Matteo and Rafael (x2) scored and Ciro and Frederik were great in defence.
Game 3 was a hard-fought 1-1 draw against hosts Athenee, a massive school with a big selection pool, and we grabbed a late equaliser to keep us alive. Dominic was outstanding defensively in this game.
Our final game was against SportLycee, regular finalists in these competitions who had won all of their games. We fought really hard and Elias kept us in it for a long time, but we succumbed to a few goals late on. If one thing typifies this team it was the last goal we scored, to prove that we don’t stop fighting until the very end.
The team really performed greater than the sum of our parts and learned a lot along the way that will stand them in good stead for May.
