Boys futsal team through to national finals

  • Secondary News

A team of Years 8, 9 and 10 students faced off against Athenee, LTL and LMAL in an under 16 futsal tournament last week. The team was under pressure to emulate the feat of St George's senior girls team and qualify for the national finals.

It was the highest standard of competition the team had played so far this year.

We started the competition against Athenee and were on top in the game, but went to sleep defensively and were 2-0 down quite quickly. We battled back and showed a lot of courage, eventually securing a 3-2 win, driven on by our captain Diego L.

Our second game was the toughest against LTL and we managed to battle out a 0-0 draw, thanks to four excellent saves from our goalkeeper Benji P, which left us in control of our own destiny. At this point, a win against LMAL would put us in the finals on 23rd March.

We started our third game very poorly and were behind 1-0 due to some nerves, but battled back fantastically. Pietro P got us level with a very calm goal and then Caleb took over scoring three fantastic goals in quick succession in a game we dominated, winning 6-1.

Michael WJ was the driving force for the team in the transition of defence to attack and Fausto M made some excellent tackles and counter attacks when he came on. Special recognition goes to Daniel De Diego Frank as the only Year 8 in the squad after being promoted from the under 14s. Daniel was excellent in defence.
