A group of Years 5 and 6 students represented St George's in an international competition for the first time at the Mediterranean Cup in Verona on 21st March.
St George's took three teams – Year 6 boys, Year 5 boys and a girls team of two Year 6s and 10 Year 5s.
The teams arrived in Verona on Thursday afternoon and had an authentic pizza lunch before training that evening as the sun set ahead of competition on qualifying Friday. After five games on Friday, both the Year 6 boys and girls teams had qualified for the Elite section, which is the top tier. The Year 5 boys qualified into the third tier, which is called the Europa section.
The next day all teams competed in another group, after which they had a semi final at the end of the day. This left the Year 6 boys playing for 7th place overall, the girls playing for 5th place overall. The Year 5 boys were playing for 21st place overall. After a walk around Verona, as well as some ice cream/candy store stops, we visited Juliet’s balcony in the city before heading home to rest for the finals.
On Sunday, all three teams won their finals! Year 6 won 1-0 against Monaco, Year 5 won 2-1 against Saudi Arabia and the girls won 3-0 against Milan, who had previously beaten them.
Individually, Sofie EM won the girls skills challenge, Elias H won Goalkeeper of the Tournament and Rafael DV won best player of the Europa section.
The teams represented our school with respect, courtesy and courage and had lots of fun. Well done to everyone!
