Welcome to the Secondary School
St George’s secondary school is a caring and supportive learning environment where there are high expectations of all students. We are small enough to be able to focus on the individual needs of the whole child, but large enough to offer a broad and balanced academic curriculum.
Academic success is our key focus. We offer the opportunity to study towards rigorous public examinations at ages 16 and 18. We follow the structure of the English and Welsh National Curriculum from 11-13, leading to IGCSEs and GCE A Levels. Our qualifications allow entry to universities worldwide. They are challenging and offer the opportunities to develop higher level academic skills and competences. We aim to nurture young people who can think critically and have a sound understanding of the contemporary World, along with their role in a dynamic, global society.
Of course, a good school is one which develops the whole person. We are rightly proud of the broad range of extra-curricular activities on offer and the emphasis on courtesy and respect towards others.
We believe that the best way to learn about St. George’s is to come and see for yourself. We very much look forward to welcoming you!
Curriculum Overview
Key Stage 3 (11-13 years)
The aim of the curriculum at St George’s school is to enable all young people to become:
• successful learners who enjoy learning, make progress and achieve
• confident individuals who are able to live safe, healthy and fulfilling lives
• responsible citizens who make a positive contribution to society.
To support these aims the curriculum in KS3 strengthens and builds upon the knowledge and skills developed in KS2 and focuses on each individual student to embed the personal, learning and thinking skills (independence, reflection, creativity, self-management, teamwork and effective participation) that will best prepare them for success at iGCSE level in KS4 and ‘A’ level in KS5.
All students in KS3 will follow a core curriculum that includes English, Maths, Science, Languages, Physical Education, History, Geography, Art, Music, Drama, ICT and Design Technology. In addition students will study elements of Personal, Social and Health Education appropriate to their age group.
Some students will receive additional support in English and Maths or have intensive intervention to develop their ability to speak and write in English if it is not their first language (English as an Additional Language).
As we recognise the importance of languages in the modern global economy, the majority of students at St George’s are offered the opportunity to study French and German. Luxembourgish, Portuguese, Spanish and Japanese are also offered. Some students who are native speakers of these languages or who demonstrate a particular aptitude may be entered early at IGCSE level.
The KS3 curriculum is broad and balanced and offers the opportunity for students of all abilities to be successful, confident and responsible citizens.
Key Stage 4 (14 - 16 years)
At St. George’s International School we offer 14 to 16 year olds a two year IGCSE programme that provides them with the opportunity to specialise or study a range of subjects. The International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) is internationally recognised and is designed to continue from the Key Stage 3 programme of study and is the ideal programme with which to progress onto A Levels or a BTEC in Higher Education.
At IGCSE, all students take the Core subjects of English Language, English Literature, Mathematics, at least one language (French or German) and the Double Science award.
The range of Optional subjects on offer is reviewed on a regular basis, thus reflecting contemporary society as well as the educational interests of our students, with IGCSEs in Economics, Business Studies and Global Perspectives taking their place beside History, Geography, Art, Music, ICT, Additional Maths, Sociology and a third language: Spanish. Students can select four of these subjects to study alongside their Core subjects. Students also have regular Physical Education and PSHE lessons but these are not examined.
Students are able to gain up to ten IGCSEs by the end of the two year period and in some cases up to twelve, if Language subjects are sat at the end of the year 9 or 10. A minimum of five IGCSEs grade A* to C are required for entry into our sixth form.
Our excellent pastoral system continues from Key Stage 3 into Key Stage 4, with students seeing their every morning for registration, as well as once a week for tutorials, ensuring that every student is fully encouraged to achieve their full potential as well as maintaining strong communication links with home. Students are supported academically by a team of qualified and committed teaching staff whose knowledge of their subject and of examination board requirements are excellent.
Key Stage 5 (16 - 18 years)
At St. George’s International School we offer post-16 qualifications that provide students with the opportunity to either specialise or study a wide range of subjects. International A levels are the ‘gold standard’ of education for many universities and employers; they are two year modular courses which are internationally recognised and accepted. As the only school in Luxembourg offering A levels we are proud not only of what we offer the students academically but also our wide range of enrichment opportunities.
Our students are well-supported by well-qualified and dedicated teaching staff. The excellent pastoral system continues into Key Stage 5. Every student is a member of a form group with a tutor who ensures that each and every student is fully encouraged to achieve his or her full potential. With small class sizes, dedicated teaching accommodation and excellent student facilities we offer a truly caring environment. This is our main aim at St. George’s, and we firmly believe that, if you are looking to further your academic career in order to progress to university level, you need look no further – St. George’s is the place for you!
